dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.

the alias of welsh-born, california-based brian williams, lustmord first emerged as an associate of spk in the early 80s, before embarking on a solo career that has yielded such classics as heresy (1990), the place where the black stars hang (1994) and (with robert rich) stalker (1995). lustmord has also contributed to numerous hollywood films as music and sound designer, and collaborated with the likes of clock dva, chris & cosey, geir jenssen, the melvins, tool, aaron turner, monte cazazza and coils jhon balance. often seen to epitomize dark ambient, it would be more accurate to say that his work simply goes deeper, further, than conventional ambient dares, or is able, to go. half a decade in the making, the word as power is his new studio album and an exploration of ritual music without dogma.

an entirely new label with fresh artists from any direction. both tracks compiled on this release are deep and spheric in their mood, similar in style, but rather different and special in their shapes of individuality. the a-side delivers a slightly straight and powerful track from alma. carried by soft moog-basses and playful spheric breaks in addition to an authentic summer groove it is definitely suitable to create open-air feeling - a glistening interpretation of a green morning. gebby dibson contributed an emotional and slow house production to the b-side of this release. in so doing, they patterned pretty versatile varieties of electronic styles. in this case its hard to classify, but joyful to listen to
